how to know your skin type?

PART I

“I do skincare but my skin doesn’t care!”.

Have you ever felt this way? Or do you get panic over that small zit appearing on your cheek even after you following a regular skincare routine?

Or is it drier than ever before that you experience peeling or itching on your face after the clay mask you put on your face to get rid of some bumps?

Or do you feel a burning sensation after a lemon mask? Probably the fault is not in whatever the mask you tried or the routine you follow.

Maybe you require more knowledge about your own skin.
SKIN TYPE! One of the basic things you should certainly know before going for a skincare routine.

Identifying your skin type is crucial and you might think that you exactly know what your skin type is and still not know what it actually is.

Knowing your skin type sounds as much important as knowing what your blood type is. You need to know what you treat for and you need to treat accordingly.

In fact, your skin fall into one of the five categories based on skin type. (Though your skin is unique to you) You may fall into one of the below categories based on characteristics that your skin possesses.

  • Dry Skin

  • Oily skin

  • Sensitive skin

  • Combination skin

  • Normal skin

Any skincare professional will look into few factors to determine your skin type.

They include water content, oil or lipid content, thickness, sensitivity, and sometimes the color as well.

The water content in your skin mainly defines your level of skin hydration and the oil content will also determine the moisture within your skin.

The three main layers of your skin will determine the thickness while the tolerance and reactions to certain products and procedures will define the level of sensitivity in your skin.

You might think that identifying your skin type is a bit tricky but the truth is it’s not.

Trust me you can do get to know your basic skin type in less than 30 minutes. (I know it’s pretty surprising) You can use any of the below methods to do this.

1. Bare-face method :

* This method takes only 30 minutes to determine what your skin type is.

* Start by cleansing your face with a mild and gentle cleanser and pat it dry. Let it sit for 30 minutes.

(Now in this step you should make sure that you don’t apply any skincare product after washing your face and that includes any toners, moisturizers or treatments you use).

* After 30 minutes finally examine your skin. If it is shiny on your forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks then chances are you have oily skin.

If you examine dry patches, itching, or peeling while your skin feels tight then you probably have dry skin. If your nose and forehead look oily and shiny while other parts feel tighter, dull, and drier then you can conclude that you possess a combination skin.

2. Blotting paper method:

Well, you can call this the fastest method to know what your skin type is.

* Just like in bare face method, thoroughly cleanse your skin with a mild and gentle cleanser and pat it dry.

* Let your bare face sit for 10-15 minutes and gently pat a blotting paper on different areas of your face.

* Hold it up to a light and look for any oily patches on it.

If it looks more oily then chances are you have oily skin. If it doesn’t then you probably are having dry skin

3. Morning skin method:

Go to bed without applying any type of skin care product at night and sleep with the bare skin.

Wake up in the morning and carefully examine your skin. If it has produced another zit overnight or looks oily,

then you can decide you have developed oily skin and if it feels tighter and you see the lines you get when you smile in the mirror disappear only after few seconds then you probably have dry skin.

If you look puffy and red then you probably may have sensitive skin.

If you look pretty gorgeous with zero to very few occasional blemishes then you might have normal skin.
